Pharmacological properties of the drug Ambrobene

Mucolytic drug. It has a bronchosecretolytic and secretomotor (expectorant) effect. Ambrobene normalizes impaired bronchopulmonary secretion, improves the rheological parameters of sputum, reduces its viscosity and facilitates discharge from the bronchi. After oral administration, Ambrobene is almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The action begins after 30 minutes and lasts for 6–12 hours. Metabolized in the liver. The half-life is 8–10 hours. About 90% of the drug is excreted in the urine.

Special instructions for the use of Ambrobene

In case of impaired renal function and/or severe liver disease, Ambrobene is taken under constant medical supervision. Use during pregnancy and lactation . Despite the lack of reliable data on the effect of ambroxol on the fetus and child, the use of ambroxol is possible only after a thorough analysis of the benefit/risk ratio. Before using Ambrobene, you should stop breastfeeding. There is no experience with the use of syrup in premature and newborn babies. For children under 2 years of age, the use of syrup is only possible under medical supervision. 5 ml of syrup contains 2.1 g of sorbitol (corresponding to 0.175 XE) and is a source of 0.53 g of fructose (the syrup should not be administered to patients with fructose intolerance).

Side effects

Forms of the drug intended for systemic treatment, involving oral administration, may lead to the following symptoms:

  • allergic skin reactions such as itching, urticaria, swelling of tissues on the face;
  • fever;
  • headache;
  • nausea;
  • weakness;
  • gastrointestinal disorders.

The inhalation solution rarely causes impaired taste perception, as well as abdominal pain and anaphylactic reactions.

Analogs

Having decided on the choice of dosage form and dosage of Ambrobene, it is easier to make a replacement at the pharmacy if the required drug is not available. You should not change the form and dose so as not to reduce the effectiveness of treatment. There are a lot of drugs with the active ingredient ambroxol, both imported and Russian: Ambroxol-Hemofarm, Ambroxol-Teva, Ambroxol-Stada, Ambroxol-Alsi, Ambroxol-Akrikhin, Ambroxol-Vertex, Ambroxol-Reneval, Ambroxol-Pharmstandard, Halixol, Lazolvan , AmbroHexal.

Not all of the drugs mentioned above have such a wide range as Ambrobene. The drug can be completely compared with the drug Lazolvan, which has also been on the market for a long time and is of high quality.

Replacing it with a drug with another active ingredient is problematic, since ambroxol has a unique set of properties. For example, it stimulates the production of pulmonary surfactant (these are biologically active substances that help perform the respiratory function, the surfactant prevents the walls of the alveoli from sticking together during breathing by reducing surface tension, and it also has a protective effect on the lungs).

In some cases, patients try to independently replace ambroxol with drugs containing acetylcysteine or carbocysteine, such as; ACC, ACC Long, Fluimucil, Bronchobos, Fluditek, Fluifort. However, this should not be done, since they act differently, they are stronger, and have more side effects and contraindications. ACC, for example, has the following purposes, in addition to bronchitis: cystic fibrosis, acute and chronic sinusitis, pulmonary collapse, atelectasis due to blockage of the bronchi by mucus plug, for washing abscesses, nasal passages, maxillary sinuses, middle ear, and so on. ACC is poorly tolerated by people with problems in the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach. In addition, this group of drugs does not have a form for inhalation and intravenous administration, like Ambrobene. Acetylcysteine must be taken separately from antibiotics with a difference of at least 1-2 hours, which is inconvenient.

Some patients want to replace Ambrobene with the well-known drug Bromhexine, but this is also inappropriate. Ambroxol is a new and more advanced form of bromhexine.

Recently, a new drug has appeared in the pharmacy assortment - the mucolytic Elmucin with a mechanism of action similar to ACC. It is milder in terms of side effects and contraindications compared to acetylcysteine, and is also successfully combined with the antibiotic amoxicillin. Elmucin, however, does not have an inhalation form and is only permitted for people over 18 years of age.

Thus, asking yourself the question: “Ambrobene or Ambroxol - which is better?”, you can buy any of them. You need to pay attention to the dosage form, dose, age and, of course, quality.

Ambrobene 1 ml: how many drops?

Each package of solution for the preparation of inhalations has a glass bottle equipped with a dropper and a measuring cup. By turning the bottle over, you can accurately measure the required number of milliliters. 1 ml of Ambrobene contains 10-12 drops. It is important to consider not only the amount of the drug, but also to maintain the concentration when preparing a solution for the nebulizer. You must first pour 4 ml of saline solution into the device’s container, then add 1 to 3 ml of Ambrobene, depending on the age of the patient.

How to drink Ambrobene for a child

It is difficult for children under three years of age to swallow tablets, and during the first two years of life it is not at all possible. Therefore, special dosage forms have been developed for young patients: syrup and solution for inhalation.

If a child’s body reacts to sugar with rashes, for example on the cheeks, using syrup is not recommended. In this case, it is better to give preference to a solution for preparing inhalation. It is safer to inhale volatile particles with medicine because they do not require systemic administration and do not contain sugars or other flavoring additives.

There is a type of inhalation solution that can be taken orally. It tastes unpleasant, but if you mix the drug with tea or any other drink, the child can drink it without noticing the medicine. It is important not to exceed the recommended dosage on the package allowed for each age category.

Ambrobene - solution for inhalation for cough

Ambrobene is based on the substance ambroxol. It is a mucolytic and at the same time has an expectorant effect. It is reasonable to use Ambroxol in the form of a solution, syrup or tablets for dry cough. Any respiratory disease accompanied by inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract will be accompanied by a cough. If it is dry, the inflammation only intensifies. For recovery, it is necessary that the mucous membranes of the affected respiratory tract produce a sufficient amount of mucus. When it leaves the body with a cough, it removes all pathogenic microorganisms, speeding up the healing process.

For inhalations

Inhalations with Ambrobene are done as follows:

For this procedure, you will need any modern inhalation device (with the exception of steam inhalations). The drug must be diluted before use; a 0.9% sodium chloride solution is used. Ambrobene and saline solution are mixed in a 1:1 ratio, the mixture should be heated to human body temperature. Breathe calmly, as usual, so as not to provoke a cough.

Patients with bronchial asthma are prescribed bronchodilators before the procedure to avoid spasms.

  • children under 2 years of age are inhaled 1 ml of solution 1-2 times a day (7.5-15 mg/day);
  • children from 2 to 6 years old, 2 ml of solution 1-2 times a day (15-30 mg/day);
  • adults and children over 6 years old, 2-3 ml of solution 1-2 times a day (15-45 mg/day).

Is it possible to use Ambrobene for a wet cough?

Ambrobene solution is recommended to be taken only for dry, unproductive cough. If the cough is wet, there is no point in taking mucolytics and expectorants, since the body copes on its own, armed with local immunity. It is not difficult to provide yourself with a natural wet cough - just drink more than 2 liters of warm liquid per day and breathe moist air. You can bring air parameters back to normal through frequent and regular ventilation or using special air humidifiers.
