Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, hemochromatosis, impaired Fe utilization (lead, sideroachristic anemia), non-iron deficiency anemia (hemolytic, megaloblastic, B12-deficient), chronic pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis. Caution. Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, malabsorption due to pathology of the small intestine (enteritis, malabsorption syndrome, resection of the small intestine, gastric resection according to Billroth II with the inclusion of the duodenum), lactose intolerance, fructose (the drug contains sorbitol). Dosage regimen: Inside, before or after meals. 1 bottle contains 800 mg Fe protein succinylate (equivalent to 40 mg Fe) and 0.235 mg calcium folinate pentahydrate (equivalent to 0.185 mg folinic acid). Adults: 1-2 bottles per day in 2 divided doses. Children: 1.5 ml/kg/day in 2 divided doses (equivalent to 4 mg/kg/day Fe3+ and 0.0235 mg/kg/day calcium folinate). Pregnant women: for the prevention of iron deficiency anemia - 1 bottle per day, for the treatment of latent and clinically significant iron deficiency anemia - 1-2 bottles per day in 2 doses. After normalization of serum Fe and Hb concentrations, the drug is continued for 8-12 weeks at a maintenance dose. Side effects: Gastrointestinal dysfunction (disappears when the dose is reduced and the drug is discontinued). Interaction: Fe absorption increases with simultaneous intake of more than 200 mg of ascorbic acid and decreases with antacids. Chloramphenicol causes a delayed response to Fe therapy. Some antitumor and antileukemic drugs (aminopterin, methotrexate and other pterin derivatives) act as folate antagonists. Special instructions: The continuous period of use should not exceed 6 months, with the exception of cases of chronic blood loss (menorrhagia, hemorrhoids, etc.) and pregnancy.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

The drug Ferlatum Fol includes iron and calcium folinate . Therefore, when taking it, the lack of iron and folate in the human body is compensated.

The main function of iron in these preparations is to transport oxygen to tissues. This component is one of the components of hemoglobin, myoglobin and iron-containing enzymes-cytochromes . It also carries out electron transfer and functions as a catalyst for oxidation reactions, hydroxylation and other metabolic processes.

The active component, iron-protein succinylate , is a complex compound in which ferric iron atoms surround semi-synthetic protein carriers, which helps prevent damage to the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract. The protein carrier can dissolve in the duodenum, optimally releasing iron.

The entry of ferric iron into the blood from the gastrointestinal tract occurs through active absorption, preventing the possibility of overdose or poisoning.

Ferlatum Foul

Ferlatum Fol (iron protein succinylate + calcium folinate pentahydrate) is an antianemic drug, a stimulator of hematopoiesis. Compensates for deficiency of iron and folic acid salts. The main task of iron is to transport oxygen to tissues and cells. This trace element is a component of hemoglobin, myoglobin (oxygen-binding protein of striated muscles and myocardium), and cytochrome enzymes. Iron works as a carrier of electrons to places where they are in demand, stimulates the occurrence of redox reactions, hydroxylation reactions and other metabolic processes. The protein succinylate contained in the drug ferlatum fol is a complex compound in which a semi-synthetic protein carrier is “encrusted” with ferric iron atoms. The protein carrier is hydrolyzed in the duodenum, releasing iron in the place most convenient for its absorption. In addition, it prevents possible damage to the gastric mucosa. The entry of ferric iron from the intestines into the blood is carried out through active absorption, which virtually eliminates the risk of overdose and poisoning. The second component of ferlatum foul - calcium folinate - replenishes folate deficiency in the body. This is a calcium salt of folinic acid, which is two orders of magnitude more active than folic acid.

Ferlatum foul has a combined release form: an oral solution containing iron protein succinylate, and a powder for preparing an oral solution containing calcium folinate pentahydrate. It is recommended to take the drug before or after meals. The daily dose for adults is 1-2 bottles in 2 doses, for children (including newborns) - 1.5 ml per 1 kg of body weight in the same 2 doses. The doctor may recommend other doses of the drug. To prevent the development of iron deficiency, pregnant women are recommended to take 1 bottle per day. For the treatment of latent or clinically pronounced iron deficiency anemia, they are prescribed 1-2 bottles per day for 2 doses.

After normalization of iron and hemoglobin levels, maintenance therapy is continued for at least another 2-3 months. A solution of ferlatum foul for oral administration is prepared as follows: press the perforator of the dispenser cap (for this you need to apply a certain force) so that the powder pours into the solution in the bottle, then vigorously shake the resulting suspension until the contents are homogenized. Then remove the dispenser cap and drink the resulting solution. The maximum duration of continuous use of ferlatum foul is 6 months. In case of chronic blood loss (for example, hemorrhoids, menorrhagia) and pregnancy, the duration of the pharmacotherapeutic course may be increased. Due to the risk of developing allergic reactions in persons with milk protein intolerance, such patients should be especially careful when using the drug. Ferlatum foul contains sorbitol, which excludes the possibility of its use by persons with genetically determined fructose intolerance. To date, the medical literature and periodicals have not described a single case of poisoning from excessive intake of ferlatum foul into the body. There have also been no descriptions of adverse drug interactions between this drug and other drugs when used together. The absorption of iron in the digestive tract increases when ferlatum foul is combined with vitamin C at a dose of over 200 mg. The opposite situation is observed when taking the drug together with drugs that reduce gastric acidity. Some cytotoxic and antileukemic drugs exhibit folate antagonism.

The effectiveness of ferlatum foul in the correction of iron deficiency conditions in pregnant women compared to traditional iron monotherapy was confirmed in a multicenter randomized clinical trial, the results of which concluded that the combination drug was superior.

Contraindications for use

It is not recommended to take any iron supplement if:

  • hypersensitivity;
  • hemosiderosis;
  • anemia caused by impaired iron utilization, for example, lead and sideroblastic, as well as non-iron deficiency - hemolytic and B12 deficiency;
  • chronic pancreatitis;
  • liver cirrhosis.

Instructions for Ferlatum (Method and dosage)

Iron preparations are intended for internal use before or after eating. The dosage is determined by the attending physician, taking into account the age, characteristics of the patient and the severity of the disorder.

When normal hemoglobin and serum iron are achieved, it is recommended to continue therapy at a maintenance dose for another 8-12 weeks.

Ferlatum is offered in a ready-to-use form. To prepare a solution for oral administration, using the instructions for Ferlatum Fol, it is necessary to press with some force on the perforator of the dispenser cap - this will allow the powder to pour out into the solution placed in the bottle. The contents of the bottle should be shaken vigorously, the dispenser cap should be removed and the resulting solution should be drunk.

Reviews about Ferlatum

It should be noted that iron-containing preparations are especially often discussed by parents of young children and women during pregnancy . This is not surprising, since it is during these periods that the body requires additional components and blood composition indicators are regularly monitored. Moreover, almost everyone who has used this drug leaves positive reviews about Ferlatum Fol. With its help, it is possible to quickly and reliably increase hemoglobin and normalize the general condition of the body.

Numerous reviews of pregnant women about Ferlatum report that this is one of the most effective remedies and put it in first place among similar drugs.

However, some women note that taking such drugs, on the contrary, worsens their well-being. This was manifested by the development of general ailments - fatigue, drowsiness, and external disorders - redness around the eyes, dulling of the complexion.

In any case, problems such as iron deficiency in the body or the development of suspected side effects should be addressed with your doctor. Timely prescribing or discontinuation of therapy will allow you to avoid complications and properly maintain your health.

FERLATUM (solution)

when they brought me not a pack of pills, but such a decent weighty box:
It contains 20 bottles of 15 ml each. And for me it’s only for 10 days. And it takes quite a long time to treat anemia, so the format seemed strange. Even a monthly course, even if taken once a day, is not included in the package. But these are minor things.

It says on the box that it is available with a prescription:

Nothing like this. Sold without restrictions. There were no problems with the purchase either. I bought it at different pharmacies and they always offered me a choice of just Ferlatum and Ferlatum Fol with folic acid.

I was also surprised by the cost. I didn't expect such a difference in price. And it’s not about how much you had to pay for one box.

We count. Ferlatum 20 bottles costs approximately 1000 rubles. I was prescribed to drink twice a day. In total, the box lasts only 10 days, we get 100 rubles per day for Ferlatum.

Ferrum Lek for 50 tablets costs approximately 500 rubles. Total 20 rubles per day with two doses.

That's the difference. As much as 5 times.

Inside the box there are 20 bottles of the drug:

And instructions:

The side effects also indicate possible problems with the gastrointestinal tract, which is what tormented me with the drug Ferrum Lek.

The bottle is made of white translucent plastic with a red ribbed cap:

The expiration date is again duplicated on the bottle:

Incomprehensible numbers below:

The top cover is perforated and it is along this perforation that it opens:

It opens easily, insert your nail into the groove on the side and pull it to the side:

The plastic breaks and the bottle is opened:

Sometimes when I remove the lid, drops of medicine fly off it, so be careful not to stain anything.

There is a dark liquid inside that resembles syrup:

The taste is not very pleasant for me. It somewhat reminds me of cherry, but it’s so sweet that I wash it down with a whole glass of water. I don't even like the aftertaste. Moreover, at first it seemed not disgusting, but after a couple of uses the taste became disgusting, and somehow cloying - ugh.

But this is medicine, so taste comes second. Much more important is its action and the absence of side effects.

The second one especially worried me, because the side effects from Ferrum Lek were enough for me and I didn’t want any more. After all, as I already said, that’s why they changed my drug and recommended Ferlatum.

So, I can say, after two months of taking it: I didn’t notice any side effects. It was such a joy, honestly.

Regarding anemia. They gave me grade 1 (the mildest), and while taking Ferlatum, my hemoglobin level rose above the minimum acceptable level. But for prevention, the doctor still recommended continuing to drink Ferlatum. But not twice a day, but once.

But here I must confess that I often forgot to take the drug for the second time in a day. The first one is stable, the second one is every other time.

From personal experience I can say that the drug definitely works and helped me, despite my irresponsible approach to the dosage schedule. And the best part for me: no side effects.

Therefore I can recommend it.

And, of course, don’t get sick :)

Ferlatum during pregnancy

As a rule, iron supplements are often prescribed to pregnant women. Ferlatum Fol is usually used, since with the help of this remedy it is possible to compensate for the deficiency of iron and B vitamins, known as folates, which are involved in the production of red blood cells. A similar state of the body can be observed in young mothers.

In the majority, reviews during pregnancy are positive. The drug is characterized as quite effective and fast-acting, fully restoring hemoglobin . Moreover, the body absorbs this product better than other iron-containing products .
