special instructions
Before starting treatment, it is advisable for the patient to take a hot shower to mechanically remove mites from the surface of the skin, as well as loosen the surface layer of the epidermis (to facilitate penetration of the drug).
Treatment of patients identified in one outbreak, as well as contact persons, should be carried out simultaneously to avoid re-infection. The persistence of itching after treatment is not an indication for prescribing an additional course of specific therapy. Itching is the body’s reaction to a killed tick and its waste products and disappears when antihistamines and ointments with glucocorticosteroids are prescribed. After treatment, medical supervision is required for 2 weeks, and in the presence of complications, for a longer time.
All items that have come into contact with contaminated skin must be thoroughly treated. Bedding and linen, towels are boiled in a solution of washing powder for 5 - 10 minutes. Outerwear is ironed on both sides with a hot iron. Items that cannot be heat treated are hung out in the open air for 3 days. Shoes, toys and other items are excluded from use for 5 days and placed in a plastic bag. Mattresses, pillows, blankets are also excluded from use for 5 days or are subjected to chamber disinfection. Upholstered furniture can be treated with disinsection preparations. The apartment must be cleaned, the floors washed with detergents or the addition of disinfectants.
It is necessary to avoid getting the drug on the mucous membranes of the eyes, nasal cavity, oral cavity, and genitals. In case of contact, rinse the mucous membranes thoroughly with warm water or 1% - 2% sodium bicarbonate solution (baking soda). If the drug gets into the stomach, you must rinse it with 1% - 2% sodium bicarbonate solution and drink a glass of water with activated carbon (stir 2 tablespoons of activated carbon in a glass of water).
The drug does not have a negative effect on the performance of potentially hazardous activities that require special attention and quick reactions (driving a car, etc.).
Overdose
In case of overdose, those manifestations that are side effects may be more intensely expressed. In particular, contact dermatitis may develop.
If the patient accidentally swallows the ointment, or a very large amount of the product is applied, contact dermatitis may develop, and the patient may lose consciousness. It is also possible to develop seizures and urinary retention.
In case of overdose, symptomatic therapy is carried out. The skin should be cleansed of the product. If the drug has been swallowed, it is necessary to perform a gastric lavage, and then take activated carbon . If necessary, anticonvulsants are used.
If undesirable reactions occur during treatment, wash off the applied medication with soap and water.
Directions for use and doses
Externally. For adults, use 20% ointment, for children - 10%. The course of treatment lasts 4 days. On the first day, after washing at night, the ointment is applied to the entire skin, excluding the face and scalp, rubbed in with hands that are not washed until the morning, 30 - 40 g of ointment is used for one rub. In areas with delicate skin, the ointment is applied without intensive rubbing. After treating the skin, only clean linen and clothing should be used. On the 2nd and 3rd days they take a break from treatment, while the remaining ointment is not washed off from the skin. On the 4th day in the evening, the patient washes with soap and rubs in the ointment as on the first day, and once again changes all the underwear. If the ointment is washed off from your hands or other areas of the skin, they must be re-treated. The ointment is completely washed off the skin on the fifth day of treatment.
Side effects
During the use of benzyl benzoate, some side effects may develop:
- local manifestations: burning sensation (often manifested in children), skin irritation, redness of the treated areas of the skin;
- contact dermatitis ;
- allergic reactions.
As a rule, all these symptoms disappear after subsequent uses of the medicine. If the negative effects do not disappear on their own, you should stop using the drug and consult a doctor. It should be borne in mind that most often skin sensitivity increases in the genital area and in damaged areas.
How the drug works
When applied to hair and skin, the active substance comes into contact with the membranes of larvae and adult parasites. The death of mites occurs within 10 minutes of contact with the medication; lice are neutralized after 2–5 hours. Benzyl benzoate penetrates chitin and other dense substances, accumulates in tissues and causes acute intoxication of insects. Laundry soap and wax tightly envelop the bodies of individuals and the space surrounding them, immobilizing them for a long time. The eggs of the parasites remain undamaged, since the toxins of the drug are unable to penetrate the thickness of their defense.
Upon contact with hair and intact skin, the drug does not penetrate the systemic bloodstream and does not cause negative reactions in the body.
What substances does it contain?
The active ingredient of benzyl benzoate is benzoic acid phenylmethyl ester, which has a detrimental effect on ticks and lice.
It also contains additional components that enhance the antibacterial effect:
- sodium hydroxide;
- nipazole;
- carbopol;
- polysorbate.
The drug does not accumulate in the skin, but penetrates the body of parasites.
Important advice from the editors
If you want to improve the condition of your skin, you should pay special attention to the creams you use. A frightening figure - 97% of creams from well-known brands contain substances that poison our body. The main components due to which all the troubles on the labels are designated as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, E214-E219
Parabens have a negative effect on the skin and can also cause hormonal imbalance. But the worst thing is that this nasty stuff gets into the liver, heart, lungs, accumulates in organs and can cause cancer. We advise you not to use products that contain these substances. Recently, experts from our editorial team conducted an analysis of natural creams, where first place was taken by products from Mulsan Сosmetic, a leader in the production of all-natural cosmetics. All products are manufactured under strict quality control and certification systems. We recommend visiting the official online store mulsan.ru. If you doubt the naturalness of your cosmetics, check the expiration date; it should not exceed one year of storage

Where it all started
After a business trip to Hong Kong, I began to experience discomfort in the eye area. First, swelling of the eyelids appeared, and then severe redness. Initially, I was sure that this was a banal allergy to new cosmetics (purchased in Hong Kong). Then I thought that the makeup remover had spoiled due to improper storage (I have it homemade, on a natural basis), because the most painful sensations were observed precisely after each successive makeup removal. I tried several different eye drops - nothing helped. And after a month of fruitless treatment, I suspected that the diagnosis was not at all related to allergies and it was time to go to the doctor. After reading that it could be demodicosis, I tried Demazol. But since it didn’t get better, I finally decided that I wouldn’t buy any more products for the experiment, but I would go to an ophthalmologist and get tested to find the true cause of the disease.
Unfortunately, my worst suspicions were confirmed - the analysis revealed the presence of demodex mites (more than 12 individuals). Diagnosis: demodicosis.
Reviews about Benzyl benzoate
In most cases, the reviews about the ointment that users leave online are positive. Many women write about the effectiveness of the product for demodicosis, noting that with its help they managed to get rid of acne. Users who know what benzyl benzoate emulsion is also write positive reviews, noting that they have successfully treated scabies. Many parents managed to rid their children of lice using this remedy. Negative aspects include the unpleasant odor of the medicine and a burning sensation when used. Some reviews say that to get results, the product had to be used longer than indicated in the instructions.
Use for demodicosis
The peculiarity of the effect of benzyl benzoate on demodicosis is the manifestation of unpleasant symptoms. Already from the first minutes after application, burning, itching and irritation develop on the face.
This aggressive effect on delicate skin is explained by the complex composition of the drug. Its production is based on the use of the preservative cetylpyridinium chloride. It has a powerful antibacterial effect, which is why the application is so difficult for skin cells to perceive.
It has been proven that the habitat of the Demodex mite is typical for the facial skin of 90% of people. He behaves neutrally, that is, he does not provoke defeat.
Under conditions, this parasite begins to act aggressively, causing terrible acne and purulent pimples. The ointment has a detrimental effect on Demodex mites within 7-32 minutes.
How is it recommended to use Benzyl benzoate ointment for demodicosis according to the instructions?
The medicine should be applied with light massage movements in a thin layer. Course therapy should continue until signs of the disease completely disappear, up to 30 days, and for some time after.
Doctors advise carrying out the procedure in the evening, after thoroughly washing your face with warm water and soap. When demodicosis is advanced, complex therapy is prescribed. It includes taking antibiotics and using physiotherapeutic procedures.
Interaction
No pharmacological interaction of Benzyl benzoate with other drugs has been detected. However, the use of 20% Benzyl benzoate emulsion, as well as ointments, should not be practiced simultaneously with other medications for external use.
With local or systemic use of corticosteroids, some symptoms ( hyperemia , itching ) may disappear completely or decrease, but the invasion will persist. Therefore, during the period of use of benzyl benzoate ointment and emulsion, it is better to avoid such drugs.
The substance cetylpyridinium chloride, which is included in the drug as an emulsifier and antimicrobial preservative, interacts with anionic active substances, that is, with soap. As a result, the medicine may lose its bacteriostatic properties.
Contraindications
Like all medicines, there are contraindications for Benzyl benzoate ointment. It is not prescribed:
- Children under three years old.
- In case of individual intolerance or high sensitivity of the body to the main active substance.
- For serious damage to the skin.
- Pustular skin rashes.
- Women during pregnancy and nursing mothers.
