Safety of Aquamaris during pregnancy

Aquamaris isotonic solution in the form of drops and spray is recommended for pregnant women during colds, exacerbation of chronic runny nose or manifestations of allergic rhinitis.

As for sinusitis and other sinusitis, in this case Aquamaris during pregnancy is one of the safest remedies, often allowing the treatment of these serious diseases to be reduced to local therapy. The gentle and effective action of the Aquamaris solution has become the reason for its enormous popularity.

During pregnancy, Aquamaris is best used in the form of a milder isotonic solution, but if necessary, you can use the “Strong” version or the hypertonic “For the throat” version.

Characteristics

The active ingredients in the drug are sterile sea water and dexpanthenol. The saline solution has a completely natural composition with microelements from the Adriatic Sea (sodium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine, sulfate and bicarbonate ions). They are in isotonic concentration, i.e. similar to that in the physiological fluids of the body.

Dexpanthenol is a chemical derivative of pantothenic acid. When combined with purified water, a colorless, transparent, odorless solution with a salty taste is obtained. It does not contain preservatives or other substances, and is available in the form of a nasal spray - in 30 ml bottles with a dispenser nozzle.

Pharmacodynamics

Aqua Maris Plus is a sterile isotonic solution containing sea water and dexpanthenol.

Dexpanthenol is a derivative of pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid, a water-soluble B complex vitamin, is a constituent of CoA. Dexpanthenol stimulates the regeneration of the mucous membrane, normalizes cellular metabolism, and has a regenerative and weak anti-inflammatory effect.

When injected into the nasal cavity, Aqua Maris Plus moisturizes the mucous membrane, stimulates regeneration and has a trophic effect on the cells of the nasal mucosa. The drug helps to liquefy mucus and normalize its production in the goblet cells of the nasal mucosa.

The trace elements included in the drug improve the function of the ciliated epithelium, which increases the resistance of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses to the introduction of pathogenic bacteria and viruses.

Action

It is quite natural that the effects of the drug are due to its composition. Water cleanses the nasal passages well of mucus and foreign particles (germs, dust, allergens). It moisturizes the epithelium and nourishes it. The mucus thins and the secretion of goblet cells is normalized.

Microelements contained in the saline solution stimulate the activity of ciliated cells, which means they enhance the protective properties of the mucous membrane against pathogens. The regenerative potential of the epithelium increases, and thanks to trophic support, damage heals faster.

Dexpanthenol, as mentioned above, is a derivative of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). This is the main part of coenzyme A, an essential substrate for various metabolic chains. Therefore, it helps to normalize metabolic processes in the cells of the mucous membrane, softens it, increases regenerative properties, and even has some anti-inflammatory effect.

Thanks to the inclusion of dexpanthenol in the spray, the therapeutic effects of the drug are enhanced, which allows you to quickly cope with a runny nose.

Indications of the drug Aqua Maris Plus

treatment and prevention of atrophic and subatrophic rhinitis;

cleansing and moisturizing the nasal mucosa in inflammatory diseases of the nasal cavity, sinuses and nasopharynx, incl. in pregnant and lactating women;

in the complex therapy of allergic and vasomotor rhinitis (especially in persons predisposed or suffering from hypersensitivity to drugs, including pregnant and lactating women);

prevention of nasal cavity infections in the autumn-winter period (including in pregnant and lactating women);

patients suffering from dry nasal mucosa and persons living and working in rooms with air conditioning and/or central heating, in order to preserve the physiological characteristics of the nasal mucosa in altered microclimatic conditions;

people whose mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract is constantly exposed to harmful influences (smokers, vehicle drivers, workers in hot and dusty workshops, as well as those living in regions with harsh climatic conditions);

elderly people - to prevent age-related atrophic changes in the nasal mucosa.

Aqualor or Aquamaris which is better?

Aqualor is the closest substitute drug for Aquamaris in composition, which differs slightly in price - the original is 40 rubles cheaper.

Manufacturers use sea water as active substances: Aqualor contains Atlantic water.

The active component is diluted to isotonic concentrations and sterilized.

Sea water is rich in salts and microelements, zinc, magnesium, iodine, selenium. There are no preservatives or dyes in the composition.

Aqualor, like Aquamaris, is presented in several forms:

• Baby – recommended for newborns.
• Soft (from six months) - helps to cope with dry nose and allergic runny nose.
• Norm (from six months) – prescribed as part of a comprehensive treatment of colds.
• Forte (from 12 months) – helps to cope with severe nasal congestion.
• Extra Forte (from 2 years) – for prolonged and chronic runny nose.

However, the Aqua Maris line is wider and includes Aqua Maris Plus with additional dexpanthenol content, as well as Aqua Maris Ectoin, which is prescribed for allergic rhinitis.

The indications, contraindications and therapeutic effect of the drugs are similar; both solutions are equipped with comfortable, safe physiological tips.

A suitable dosage form is selected taking into account the patient’s age: drops are prescribed for infants, sprays and aerosols are prescribed for adults. Good tolerability is noted; in rare cases, the development of allergies has been reported.

Aqualor is a more profitable analogue in terms of volume and shelf life. The manufacturer suggests using Aqua Maris for 100 days, while Aqualor can be used until the expiration date of the bottle with the solution.

Directions for use and doses

Intranasally.

Treatment. Adults and children over 16 years of age - 4-8 times a day, 2-3 sprays in each nasal passage; from 7 to 16 years - 4-6 times a day, 2 injections into each nasal passage; from 1 year to 7 years - 4 times a day, 2 sprays in each nasal passage. The course of treatment in all cases is 2–4 weeks (at the discretion of the attending physician). It is recommended to repeat the course in a month.

Prevention. Adults and children over 16 years of age - 3-6 times a day, 2-3 sprays in each nasal passage; from 7 to 16 years - 2-4 times a day, 2 injections into each nasal passage; from 1 year to 7 years - 1-3 times a day, 1-2 sprays in each nasal passage.

Contraindications

The drug should not be used if you are aware of intolerance to individual components. In addition, contraindications include children under 1 year of age. But doctors sometimes ignore this prohibition and prescribe Aquamaris Plus to infants; in this case, the dosage may be reduced. The spray is not considered a toxic drug, so the ban on the use of the medicine in infants may be due to the lack of sufficient practice in treating such patients with sea water.

Aquamaris Plus is a relatively safe medicine, but you can start using it only as prescribed by a doctor.

Aquamaris instructions for use

For adults

Aqua Maris sprays are used during periods of illness or exacerbation of allergies 4-6 times a day. As a general rule, when nasal congestion occurs, you should first relieve swelling of the mucous membrane with a vasoconstrictor and only then rinse. This rule does not apply to Aquamaris for the throat and ears.

As a prophylactic agent, Aqua Maris sprays are used depending on the need and type:

Sprays for the nose and throat – 1-2 times a day; ear spray – 2 times a week or less.

Instructions for use of Aquamaris do not limit the period of use (except for Strong spray). Despite the fact that these products are exclusively natural in their composition, they should not be used constantly unless necessary.

For children

The Croatian manufacturer produces a separate children's Aquamaris baby, which differs from the adult version of Norm in its small volume and a nozzle that is more convenient for insertion into a child's nose. Spray "baby" is indicated for use in children from 3 months. Aquamaris baby has no fundamental difference in composition.

Starting from 2 years of age, the manufacturer recommends using standard sprays aimed at adults. In accordance with the instructions for use of Aquamaris, children can use the products in this series as often and in dosages similar to adults.

Aquamaris for newborns

For the hygiene of newborns' noses, starting from the first day of life, the company Jadran Galenski Laboratories produces special drops for regular care and prevention of runny nose.

During pregnancy

Aqua Maris, as well as its analogues - Aqualor, Dolphin, Quix - is an ideal remedy for mitigating the symptoms of rhinitis in pregnant women. In case of heavy nasal discharge, it safely cleanses the nose and gently stimulates the immunity of the nasal mucosa, naturally increasing the body's defenses. For nasal congestion, Aquamaris Strong with an anti-congestant effect is the only alternative to unauthorized vasoconstrictor drops.

When breastfeeding

All products in the Aqua Maris series are completely natural and can be safely used by breastfeeding women without any restrictions.

Contraindications

Aquamaris, which does not contain additives, is absolutely safe and has no contraindications for use, including during pregnancy. You should follow the doctor's recommendations and the instructions in the medication instructions and do not use the spray (use may cause injury to the mucous membrane or other complications) to treat children under one year of age.

You cannot use Aquamaris Plus if you are hypersensitive to the substance d-panthenol. Side effects (usually complications in the form of eustachitis) are possible only if the drug is used incorrectly. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to follow the rules of instillation for young children, and if necessary for very old children, use a special device that prevents the solution from entering the Eustachian canal - Aquamaris home.

Description

The active ingredient of the medicine is isotonic sea water. The medicine is sold from pharmacies in the form of a spray. “Aquamaris” with dexpanthenol contains such useful substances as:

• potassium;
• magnesium;
• chlorine;
• sulfur.

The drug is supplemented with additional components:

• water;
• dexpanthenol.

“Aquamaris” with dexpanthenol is produced in sterile dark glass bottles, thirty milliliters each. Each tube is equipped with a sprayer, which is tightly closed with a plastic cap.

The shelf life of the drug is twenty-four months. Once opened, it only needs to be used for sixty days. The medication should be kept in a cool and dark place, preferably in the refrigerator.

Before each use, the can should be warmed in your hands to room temperature.
