Hydrovit
Hydrovit
® (English:
Hydrovit
®) is a medicine used to compensate for fluid loss by the body, normalize water-electrolyte balance, and correct the acid-base environment.
A drug similar in composition and purpose is Hydrovit forte
(see).
Dosage form and composition of Hydrovit
Hydrovit is available in the form of a powder for the preparation of a solution for oral administration, packaged in bags made of a combined material. The active ingredient Hydrovit is a combination of glucose (the terms “dextrose” and “glucose” are synonyms) and potassium and sodium salts: glucose + potassium chloride + sodium chloride + sodium citrate (lat. dextrose + potassium chloride + sodium chloride + sodium citrate
). Hydrovit is sold in two versions, differing, due to the different excipients included in the composition, in weight, appearance and smell:
- Hydrovit for children. White or almost white powder. The mass of the contents of one sachet is 4.869 g, the excipient is colloidal silicon dioxide.
- Hydrovit for children strawberry. The powder is light red in color, with the smell of strawberries. The weight of the contents of one sachet is 5.129 g, excipients: colloidal silicon dioxide, aspartame sweetener, Evoglass strawberry flavor, dry beet root spray, malic acid.
One sachet of Hydrovit is intended for the preparation of one dose of solution for oral administration and contains the following amount of active ingredients:
Ingredient | Contents of one sachet of Hydrovit, g
dextrose hydrate | 3,56 | |
potassium chloride | 0,3
sodium chloride | 0,47 | |
sodium hydrogen citrate | 0,53 |
The osmolality of the Hydrovit solution is 240 mOsm/l. The osmolarity of Hydrovit is less than the osmolarity of the so-called “classic” oral rehydration salts (311 mOsm/l), which were recommended by WHO and UNICEF more than 30 years ago, and is close to the osmolarity of the “improved” oral rehydration salts (approximately 245 mOsm/l), recommended WHO and UNICEF in 2006.
Indications for use of Hydrovit
- oral rehydration therapy to replace fluid and salt losses due to diarrhea
- restoration of water-electrolyte balance
- for the purpose of prevention during thermal and physical stress leading to intense sweating
Directions for use of Hydrovit and dosage
A packet of Hydrovit dissolves in 200 ml of drinking or freshly boiled chilled water or tea. The resulting solution should be drunk immediately after preparation in one or several small portions. At room temperature, the solution is suitable for use for no more than an hour, when stored in the refrigerator - no more than a day. Dosage:
- children under three years of age, including infants - 3-5 sachets (or more, if necessary) per day, which is equivalent to 1-1.5 daily dose of the prepared solution
- middle-aged children: single dose - 1 sachet after each bowel movement
- older children and adults: single dose - 1-2 sachets after each bowel movement
For children under three years of age, Hydrovit is prescribed at the rate of 150 ml of solution per kg of the child’s weight, for patients over three years of age, including adults, at the rate of 20 to 40 ml of solution per kg of the patient’s weight.
To quickly and more completely compensate for the loss of fluid and salts, large doses of Gidrovit can be prescribed, especially at the beginning of therapy.
The duration of treatment with Gidrovit is until the diarrhea stops. The doctor can extend the duration of therapy by a day for younger patients and by one and a half days for others.

special instructions
Treatment with Gidrovit should be started as soon as possible to avoid the consequences of serious fluid loss (depression of consciousness, hypovolemic shock). Severe dehydration, especially in infants, should be initially treated with IV fluids and then, if appropriate, with oral therapy.
Diarrhea accompanied by frequent vomiting may be a sign of a serious illness. If diarrhea persists for a long time and/or if your general condition worsens, you should consult a doctor.
When using the drug Hydrovit® in breastfed children, no change in diet is required. Continue to give Hydrovit® in small portions between feedings.
Children who are not breastfed can return to a normal diet after 6-12 hours. Infants under 6 months of age should dilute the first portion of formula with water (1 part formula + 2 parts water or 1 part formula + 1 part water). For older infants, their usual portion of formula is given undiluted. Younger and older children should be given age-appropriate foods containing polymeric carbohydrates (eg, potatoes, rice, bananas).
Hydrovit is not recommended for use if the drug is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract when taken orally (for example, in case of acute intestinal obstruction, vomiting).
Patients with phenylketonuria and inborn errors of metabolism should remember that Hydrovit® (strawberry for children) contains aspartame, a sugar substitute that is converted in the body to phenylalanine.
Patients with diabetes mellitus should note that 1 packet of Hydrovit contains 3.56 g of glucose, which is equivalent to 3.56 g of carbohydrates or 0.3 g of carbohydrate substitute.
The glucose concentration in the prepared solution for oral administration is 90 mmol/l. Concentration of electrolytes in the prepared solution for oral administration: Na+ - 60 mmol/l, K+ - 20 mmol/l, Cl - 60 mmol/l, HCO3- - 10 mmol/l. The osmolality of the prepared solution for oral administration is 240 mOsm/l.
Overdose
For patients without impaired renal function, there is usually no risk of poisoning or overdose from this drug.
When using this glucose-electrolyte solution in patients with confirmed or latent diabetes mellitus, blood sugar levels may increase, up to a state of diabetic coma.
Accidental intoxication with undiluted powder may disrupt electrolyte balance and worsen diarrhea.
Treatment:
you should seek medical help.
Storage conditions and periods
The drug must be stored in a dry room at a temperature not exceeding +25 degrees Celsius. Hydrovit can be stored for 48 months from the date of release. As for drugs with strawberry flavor, its shelf life has been reduced by the manufacturer to 18 months.

Reviews
There are positive reviews about the drug on the forums. Moreover, both doctors and patients leave them. Doctors call Hydrovit a balanced polyionic solution designed to replenish fluid volume.
According to them, the key advantage of this product is that, unlike other similar drugs, it contains silicon dioxide, which is a sorbent. The effectiveness of the drug is confirmed by the fact that it is prescribed even for serious intestinal infections.
According to consumer reviews, already on the first day of taking the drug, the condition of adults and children noticeably improved, and fluid loss through vomiting and stool decreased. In infants, diuresis was restored and weight gain was noted.
