Panthenol - what is it?

Panthenol, or pantothenic acid

– water-soluble vitamin B5 (dexpanthenol) with low molecular weight and high ability to penetrate into the deep layers of the skin.

Pantothenic acid was discovered in the 30s of the 20th century and almost immediately found application in pharmacology due to its pronounced anti-inflammatory, regenerating, and soothing properties. The ability to accelerate tissue renewal, maintain their firmness and elasticity, smooth out wrinkles, soften and moisturize the epidermis has allowed vitamin B5 to take first place among components for facial and body skin care. Today, panthenol for the face is one of the key components and helps solve several skin problems at once.

Effect on the skin

Well, for starters, there is no need to confuse the different properties of the drugs that are the main active ingredient!

  • Dexpanthenol is a drug that “lives” exclusively in pharmacology in the form of an ointment.
  • Panthenol is more often used in various creams, masks and foams in the beauty industry.

Where is panthenol used?

  • In cosmetics, Panthenol in cosmetics has earned a reputation as a powerful external restorative, healing, moisturizing agent. In cosmetic formulas, vitamin B5 is found in the form of pantothenic acid derivatives: D- and L-panthenols. Often used in soothing products for sensitive, dry, oily and problematic facial skin, as well as in after-sun formulas. Its ability to stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin, reduce facial wrinkles, and smooth out skin texture allows the use of panthenol as part of anti-aging corrective care. Shampoos, balms and masks with provitamin B5 for hair improve hair structure, stimulate growth, prevent irritation and dryness of the scalp.
  • In cosmetology Since the key function of dexpanthenol is the regeneration of the skin, in cosmetology products based on it are used mainly after traumatic aesthetic procedures, for example, chemical peels, photoepilation, laser resurfacing, during which the integrity of the epidermal layer of the skin is damaged. Panthenol-containing creams, gels, masks help quickly soothe and moisturize damaged skin, relieve swelling and swelling of tissues, shorten the rehabilitation period and prevent complications.

Varieties and composition

All produced forms of Panthenol include D-panthenol, a synthetic derivative of vitamin B5, or panthenol, its analogue.

To enhance the effect, many manufacturers add aloe vera extract, allantoin, and vitamin E as additional components.

It is better to choose facial preparations with these caring components, because they add positive properties to the beneficial properties of the drug:

  • hydration;
  • anti-inflammatory effect;
  • antioxidant properties.

This certainly won't make it any worse.

Panthenol: properties for skin

If we talk about how panthenol works for the skin, then first of all we need to mention its regenerative effect. The product promotes rapid restoration of the epidermis. It also gradually reduces inflammation, stabilizes metabolism in cells, and strengthens collagen fibers. In addition, panthenol moisturizes the skin and is an excellent remedy for combating dryness.

For burns, injuries, wounds and various skin diseases, the product compensates for the deficiency of pantothenic acid from which it is produced. When used externally, it is well absorbed. The body converts the drug into pantothenic acid, and then binds it to plasma proteins.

D-PANTHENOL (ointment)

It appeared very suddenly, I had small rashes before, but there were fewer of them.
I used different products throughout the year, but it was all in vain and just a “waste of time.” Later I came across a phrase like “Panthenol and D-panthenol for acne and uneven skin.” I didn’t even read this article, and without hope, I decided, out of nothing to do, to try to use this ointment, which I had had for a year, looking at the expiration date and deciding that the ointment was still in excellent condition and there was quite a lot of it, which I was happy about, not I even know why. There was a certain desire to resume treatment and start all over again. Having spread the ointment onto previously cleansed skin, I began to wipe off the excess. Night. Dream. Morning. When I woke up, I, of course, immediately went to look in the mirror (remembering that incident with wound healing, I thought “maybe my acne will go away just as quickly?” I asked myself this question and had already reached the bathroom. Having looked in the mirror, I didn’t I know what I expected to see there except “disheveled hair and my sleepy face”, I didn’t see any changes, without losing the new hope that had appeared, I wiped my face with “Nivea toner for sensitive skin”, thereby washing off the remaining greasy film that remained from the ointment, and finally washed my face with cool water. I repeated the same procedure at night, and on the 3rd day, I was completely shocked and delighted. My “pimples” became just small without purulence and non-inflamed red spots, that is, there were no all those purulent inflammations on the face, no matter how disgusting it may sound. Having touched the skin 100 times and making sure that there was a smooth surface on the face without tubercles (only with red spots), I was happy the same procedures as always. Tonic and cool water. (To my great regret, the photo that I had before is no longer available, but I will still attach the “after” photo). This is what my skin looks like now, yes there are some minor unevenness, but overall what was there is no longer there and I’m incredibly happy about it. To this day, I use the ointment and apply it at night when I notice small rashes that go away the next day after using the ointment.

There are still a bunch of red spots and traces of pimples left in some places, but I am fighting them, and at this time they are almost completely invisible. In general, I had more of a problem - on my cheeks. There was also some on the forehead, but not as much. Very small rash on the chin.

In general, it’s not difficult to guess that I definitely liked using the ointment “against acne”, I did not expect such a result. At this time, I no longer have such a big problem from which the ointment saved me. But I only get very minor rashes during the PMS period.

I recommend it to everyone for EVERYDAY use of the product. You will see progress within 3-5 days of using the product.

Thank you for reading my review.

Features of using panthenol for different skin types

  • For oily skin The component is contained in light non-comedogenic gels, fluids, creams for oily problem skin, prevents tissue dehydration and fights its consequences: dryness, keratosis, peeling, irritation.
  • For dry skin Found in many moisturizing cosmetic product formulas. Used in baby skin care products. Nourishes, moisturizes, protects the epidermis, combines well with other emollients and hydrofixatives, such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
  • For normal The normal type is highly susceptible to almost all caring components in cosmetics. If your base cream for normal skin contains panthenol, then use it according to the instructions for use.
  • For combination The combination type combines the dry area of the U-zone and the T-zone, in which the sebaceous glands are most active. Since panthenol does not clog pores, moisturizes, softens, and restores the epidermis, it is widely used in the care of this skin type.

Panthenol: application

Panthenol ointment or cream is applied to the skin (for burns with boiling water, etc.) in a thin layer with previously washed hands. After application, the product must be rubbed in gently. The procedure must be repeated (on average 2–4 times a day, but more often). If panthenol cream, ointment or spray is used for purulent wounds, then an antiseptic treatment must be carried out before this.

The product is also recommended for infants for diaper rash and diaper dermatitis. It is applied to the skin every time after changing diapers and water procedures. Treatment continues until the skin is completely healed.

One of the most common ways to use panthenol moisturizing cream is to treat cracked and inflamed nipples in nursing women. The product is applied to the cracks every time after feeding, without washing it off. Reviews of ointment with panthenol confirm its ability to heal cracks.

Panthenol aerosol with a cooling effect is best suited for healing sun and other burns.

!

Burns are the main indication for the use of this remedy.

The instructions for the drug provide a precise description of how to apply panthenol spray to the skin. The sooner you use it after damage, the better the treatment effect will be. If you choose which is better - panthenol ointment or spray - to use for the treatment of burns, then you should give preference to the spray because of its convenient application.

To treat the surface of the burn, the can is held in a vertical position, shaken first, and then evenly applied to the skin. It is important to ensure that the entire burn is covered with foam. The spray foam is absorbed and has an analgesic and wound-healing effect. The product forms a thin film on the skin: it prevents moisture loss.

The spray must be applied after burns several times, taking into account the degree of damage.

Expert opinion

The most noticeable results are shown by products containing the original dexpanthenol, which cannot be said about cheaper analogues of this product.

Forms of release of cosmetics with panthenol

Depending on the type and needs of the skin, there are several formats of cosmetic products containing panthenol. For oily and combination skin, choose water-based products with light textures - gels, serums, fluids, balms. For dry skin, nourishing products containing lipid-restoring formulas and oils, such as rich creams, are suitable.

Often panthenol can be found in the base of foundations or correctors, lipsticks or balms, for example, in the composition of Cicaplast restoring lip barrier balm. Shampoos, conditioners, and masks with panthenol are produced for hair.

Is there any effect on wrinkles?

We immediately assume that Panthenol will not be able to fight serious age-related changes, so there is no point in using it at 40+, wrinkles will not go away.

In the initial stages of aging, Panthenol will help retain moisture in skin cells, smooth out fine wrinkles and improve the color and turgor of the skin, making it smooth and silky.

Just don’t forget that all this is possible at the age of 25+, when all the sad processes are just beginning. Unfortunately, at this time we don’t think at all about the safety of our face.

I think that at 30 you can also try. Course of treatment: 7 days with Panthenol cream, then 2 weeks without it. Then you can repeat the treatment week.
