Compound

One coated tablet contains 20 mg of the main substance famotidine and auxiliary components: lactose monohydrate, povidone K90, colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, magnesium stearate, talc, sodium carboxymethyl starch.
One bottle of the drug in the form of a lyophilized powder, from which an injection solution is prepared, contains 20 mg of the main substance famotidine . The auxiliary component is a solution of sodium chloride 0.9% in a 5 ml ampoule.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

This drug, acting on the walls of the stomach, helps to effectively reduce the production of gastric juice, reducing its volume. At the same time, the evacuation function of the stomach, blood circulation in the liver, secretory function of the pancreas, and so on do not change.

The dosage form Kvamatel Mini is also used to treat ulcerative lesions of the stomach and duodenum. The main indication for taking tablets is heartburn . This not only eliminates unpleasant symptoms, but also prevents excessive production of hydrochloric acid. Therefore, Kvamatel Mini helps eliminate heartburn and prevents the development of peptic ulcers.

To achieve a therapeutic effect lasting 10-12 hours, a single dose of the drug at a dosage of 20-40 mg may be sufficient. If you take 10 mg, its effect will last about 9 hours. The drug is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, metabolized in the liver, excreted by the kidneys, a small part - in the form of metabolites, and mostly unchanged.

Using quamatel for cats

Kvamatel is used in the treatment and prevention of gastric (stomach) and intestinal ulcers in cats. Kvamatel promotes the healing of ulcers in animals with ulcers or erosions (shallow depressions in the gastric mucosa). Kvamatel may be useful in treating stomach inflammation caused by kidney failure. Another use is to treat gastric reflux disease, a condition similar to “heartburn” in humans and caused by stomach acid moving up into the lower esophagus. To reduce damage to the esophagus, this drug is prescribed to cats.

Cats with mast cell tumors can be treated with Quamatel or similar drugs, as these tumors can produce large amounts of histamine.

Side effects

Treatment with Kvamatel can lead to the development of various undesirable reactions in the body. Deviations in the functions of the gastrointestinal tract occur especially often: nausea , vomiting , problems with stool, loss of appetite , impaired liver function , dry mouth.

The nervous, hematopoietic and cardiovascular systems often suffer, which is manifested by: headache, dizziness , high fatigue, anxiety, heart rhythm disturbances, leukopenia , thrombocytopenia and so on. Allergic reactions may also develop, body temperature may rise, muscle or joint pain, gynecomastia , and more may occur. If any unwanted effects occur, you should consult a specialist.

Kvamatel, instructions for use (Method and dosage)

Despite the fact that the indications for the use of Kvamatel include various gastrointestinal diseases associated with ulcerative lesions, when starting treatment it is necessary to exclude malignancy of the ulcer .

An injection solution prepared from lyophilized powder is used strictly for intravenous administration in a hospital setting. The medicine is prepared from powder in a bottle, mixed with a solvent from an ampoule. When the powder is completely dissolved, the product is slowly injected into a vein over 2 minutes.

In addition, intravenous infusion of Kvamatel is possible. To do this, the powder is dissolved in 5 ml of sodium chloride 0.9% and mixed with the infusion solution. The period of this type of administration can be 15-30 minutes.

The drug in tablets should be taken without crushing or chewing, with plenty of liquid. The dosage and duration of therapy is determined by the attending physician for each patient.

This also applies to Kvamatel Mini tablets. However, in most cases, adult patients suffering from heartburn caused by high acidity need to take 1 tablet daily. To prevent heartburn and postprandial symptoms, one tablet is also prescribed one hour before meals. You can take no more than 2 tablets per day.

Continuous treatment should not exceed a course of 2 weeks. If after 7 days of therapy the symptoms do not disappear, you should urgently visit your doctor - undergo a re-examination and receive a new treatment prescription.

The therapeutic effect of famotidine is associated primarily with a decrease in the aggressiveness of gastric juice

Famotidine reduces the production of hydrochloric acid and pepsin activity; in a single dose of 40 mg reduces the nighttime secretion of H+ ions by 94%, basal secretion by 92%.

Famotidine has an additional mechanism of action

Stimulates the protective properties of the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum by:

  • increased blood flow in the mucous membrane,
  • increasing bicarbonate production,
  • increasing the synthesis of prostaglandins,
  • enhancing epithelial repair.

The higher effectiveness of QUAMATEL compared to ranitidine was shown in multicenter clinical studies of patients with duodenal ulcer [1, 2]. The results of these tests are shown in the graph, which shows the percentage of cured patients at different periods of treatment.

KVAMATEL® quickly relieves pain in peptic ulcers [1, 3, 4]. When taken orally in a single dose of 40 mg per day, the pain syndrome disappears within 1 week in 66% of patients. With intravenous administration of 20 mg twice a day, pain in most cases disappears on the 3-4th day of treatment [5, 7].

The main differences between KVAMATEL and other N

2-blockers
Less than the average effective therapeutic dose

    Kvamatel 40 mg Ranitidine 300 mg Cimetidine 1000 mg

Longer duration of action

    Kvamatel 10-12 hours Ranitidine 7-8 hours Cimetidine 5 hours

Does not have side effects characteristic of other H2 blockers.
The probability of side effects does not exceed 1%. Safe for long-term use.

Does not interfere with liver function.

May be recommended for long-term therapy in men:

  • does not cause impotence, as it does not have an antiandrogenic effect;
  • Gynecomastia does not develop due to the fact that it does not increase the level of prolactin in the blood.

Does not increase the bioavailability of alcohol, as it does not reduce the activity of liver alcohol dehydrogenase.
It can be successfully used for the treatment of erosive and ulcerative lesions of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum in persons suffering from alcoholism.

The most important advantage of
KVAMATEL is the availability of a dosage form for intravenous administration.
Drug interactions

It does not interact with the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, therefore it does not affect the metabolism of a number of drugs (indirect anticoagulants, diphenine, theophylline, propranolol, metronidazole, etc.). However, it should be taken into account that with an increase in gastric pH, the absorption of simultaneously administered ketoconazole may decrease.

Safety

Does not have carcinogenic or mutagenic effects; does not affect reproductive function.

Indications for the use of KVAMATEL and recommended doses
Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum
during exacerbation - 40 mg 1 time per day in the evening; in remission as anti-relapse maintenance therapy - 20 mg 1 time per day.

Reflux esophagitis

40-80 mg per day.

Symptomatic ulcers

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome - 60-80 mg per day; medicinal ulcers (with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and steroid hormones) and stress ulcers - 40 mg once a day for treatment and 20 mg once a day for prevention.

KVAMATEL® is used intravenously:

  • for the treatment of erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastroduodenal zone;
  • to prevent bleeding;
  • for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers with intense pain;
  • if it is impossible to take the drug orally for reflux esophagitis complicated by a peptic ulcer or esophageal stricture; with esophageal-tracheal or esophageal-pleural fistulas, vomiting, coma, etc.;
  • for the prevention of aspiration (Mendelssohn syndrome) during general anesthesia;
  • for the treatment and prevention of acute stress ulcers in cases of extensive burns and frostbite, neurosurgical operations and other stressful situations;
  • in the treatment of bleeding; according to Russian authors [5, 7, 8], it is effective in 87% of cases.

When administered intravenously, QUAMATEL® causes a more rapid and pronounced inhibition of gastric secretion than its tablet form. The maximum effect after intravenous administration develops within 30 minutes; and after oral administration - after 1 hour.

The use of KVAMATEL in acute situations can reduce the number of patients subject to surgical treatment.

Recommended doses: 20 mg intravenously (stream or drip) twice a day.

The use of KVAMATEL in injection form for peptic ulcer disease allows you to relieve persistent pain within 2-3 days. Effective for relieving pain in acute pancreatitis and painful forms of chronic pancreatitis.

Contraindications

The main contraindications to the use of KVAMATEL are hypersensitivity to H2-blockers, pregnancy, lactation, childhood (due to lack of necessary experience). In case of renal failure (creatinine clearance below 30-60 ml/min) and decompensated liver cirrhosis, the dose should be reduced to 20 mg per day.

Warning

Before starting treatment, it is necessary to exclude the malignant nature of the stomach ulcer (as with all H2 blockers).

Side effect

KVAMATEL® is generally well tolerated by patients. Side effects are very rare - headache, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea.

Gastric ulcers and erosions are relatively common complications of renal failure, gastric bloating, steroid treatment, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) administration, and primary gastric disease. Drug therapy is often necessary to treat ulcers and prevent further health problems in cats.

Kvamatel is an antiulcer drug of the histamine receptor-2 (H-2) blocker class. Stimulation of H-2 receptors (targets) located on the cell membranes of stomach cells leads to the secretion of gastric juice and hydrochloric acid, in particular. By blocking these receptors, cats' stomach acid will not be released, allowing the ulcer to heal.

Kvamatel and other H-2 blockers are useful in the treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers

(duodenum) and intestines, as they prevent the activation of this cellular receptor. Other drugs with similar effects include ranitidine (Zantac®), nizatidine (Axid®), and cimetidine (Tagamet®). This drug is not approved for use in animals by the US Food and Drug Administration, but veterinarians legally prescribe it as an off-label drug.

  • Quamatel is available over the counter but should not be administered to cats except under the supervision and direction of a veterinarian.

  • This drug is registered for use in humans only.
