Active substance

Tetrizoline

Compound

The active ingredient is tetrizoline hydrochloride.

pharmachologic effect

Tetrizoline is an adrenomimetic drug that stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors of the sympathetic nervous system, but has no or weak effect on beta-adrenergic receptors. Being an adrenomimetic amine, tetrizoline has a vasoconstrictor effect and reduces tissue swelling. The effect begins 60 seconds after instillation and lasts 4-8 hours. When applied topically, systemic absorption is possible in patients with damage to the mucous membrane and epithelium. Detailed pharmacokinetic studies have not been conducted following topical application of eye drops.

Indications for use

To relieve swelling and hyperemia of the conjunctiva (redness of the eyes), caused by exposure to chemical and physical factors (smoke, wind, dust, chlorinated water, light, cosmetics, contact lenses), as well as those arising from allergic reactions such as hay fever.

Mode of application

Locally. Adults and children over 2 years old, 1 drop into the affected eye 2-3 times a day. Use of the drug for more than 4 days should only be done under the supervision of a physician.

Interaction

The drug "Vizin Classic" should not be used simultaneously with MAO inhibitors such as tranylcypromine, tricyclic antidepressants, or drugs that increase blood pressure. Combination therapy with these groups of drugs can lead to increased vasoconstrictor effects and increased blood pressure.

Side effect

Uncommon: reactive hyperemia, burning sensation, dry mucous membranes, systemic disorders (for example, palpitations, headache, tremor, weakness, sweating and increased blood pressure). Blurred vision, conjunctival irritation, or rarely mydriasis may occur. In addition, systemic adrenomimetic effects are infrequently observed. In isolated cases, after long-term use of tetrizoline, keratinization of the epithelium (xerosis) of the conjunctiva with occlusion of the lacrimal openings and epiphora has been reported.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, angle-closure glaucoma, children under 2 years of age.

Overdose

Symptoms: Excessive systemic absorption of alpha-adrenomimetic imidazole derivatives can lead to depression of the central nervous system, which is manifested by drowsiness, low body temperature, bradycardia, shock-like hypotension, apnea and coma. Symptoms of overdose are mydriasis, nausea, cyanosis, fever, convulsions, tachycardia, arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, increased blood pressure, pulmonary edema, respiratory dysfunction, and mental disorders. The risk of overdose symptoms associated with the absorption of the drug is especially high in newborns and small children if swallowed, resulting in possible disturbances in the central nervous system, as well as respiratory depression and collapse. The toxic dose of tetrizoline is 0.01 mg per kilogram of body weight. Treatment : In case of overdose, activated charcoal, gastric lavage, oxygen inhalation, antipyretics and anticonvulsants are prescribed. To lower blood pressure, use phentolamine 5 mg in saline solution slowly intravenously or 100 mg orally. Vasopressor drugs are contraindicated in patients with low blood pressure. In case of symptoms caused by blockade of m-cholinergic receptors, the antidote physostigmine is used. If any symptoms of overdose appear, consult a doctor immediately!

special instructions

Contact lenses should be removed before instilling the drug and installed after 15 minutes. It is necessary to avoid direct contact of the drug with soft contact lenses due to possible disruption of their transparency. The development of reactive hyperemia of the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa (rhinitis medicamentosa) may develop due to improper use of the drug. If you experience intense pain in the eyes, severe acute or unilateral redness of the eyes, headaches, blurred vision, spots before the eyes or double vision, you should immediately consult a doctor. If irritation or redness is associated with serious diseases of the organ of vision: infection, foreign body or chemical injury to the cornea, consultation with an ophthalmologist is necessary. Long-term use and overdose of the drug should be avoided, especially in children. If the medicine has become unusable or has expired, do not pour it into wastewater or throw it outside! Place the medication in a bag and place it in the trash. These measures will help protect the environment! In rare cases, after using Visin Classic eye drops, blurred vision occurs, which can affect the ability to drive a car and operate machinery.
