The annual flu vaccination campaign will start in September 2022. In this article, we will answer the main questions related to the seasonal epidemic of respiratory diseases and talk about the vaccines that are available to children and their parents this season.
Available: Ultrix quadri, Grippol Plus, Sovigripp and Flu-M.
How dangerous is the flu?
There is probably no person who does not suffer from ARVI. According to WHO, every person gets a cold from 2 to 4 times a year, school-age children - 4-5 times, preschoolers - 6 times a year, and babies in their first year of life - from 2 to 12 times. Among ARVI, the influenza virus is truly dangerous, which is why its prevention and treatment is given such great importance. Flu can lead to viral pneumonia and severe intoxication. It also leads to decreased immunity and exacerbation of chronic bacterial infections, bronchial asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney diseases. All this, in turn, can lead to death. Therefore, patients with symptoms of severe intoxication, meningitis, acute respiratory and heart failure, high fever for more than 5 days, and pregnant women must be hospitalized in the infectious diseases department.
Dosage regimen
Vaccination is carried out annually in the autumn-winter period.
- For children over 3 years of age, adolescents and adults, the vaccine is administered intramuscularly or deeply subcutaneously into the upper third of the outer surface of the shoulder (into the deltoid muscle), and for younger children - intramuscularly into the anterolateral surface of the thigh.
- Children aged 6 to 35 months inclusive are administered 0.25 ml twice with an interval of 4 weeks.
- For children over 36 months and adults, the vaccine is administered once in a dose of 0.5 ml.
- Children who have not previously had the flu and have not been vaccinated may receive the vaccine twice with an interval of 3-4 weeks.
Flu-M vaccine and Grippol Plus flu vaccine: what are the similarities and differences?
The principle of action of vaccines is the same.
After administration of the Flu-M or Grippol Plus , immunity is developed within 8–12 days .
The duration of post-vaccination immunity ranges from 6 to 12 months. Both vaccines are inactivated (do not contain live virus particles) and trivalent - they protect against three strains of influenza.
The main difference between the two vaccines is the composition of the drugs and their indications.
Thus, the drug “Flu-M” contains all purified proteins (surface and internal) and other parts of the influenza virus.
- Vaccination with Flu-M is indicated for people aged 18 to 60 years. The Flu-M vaccine without a preservative, which we use at Euromed Clinic, is approved for children from 6 years of age.
- The decision to vaccinate pregnant women and nursing mothers is made by a doctor on a case-by-case basis.
The Grippol Plus vaccine is a subunit vaccine, which contains only two highly purified surface proteins of the influenza virus, which are involved in the formation of the immune response.
The Grippol Plus vaccination
is suitable for the prevention of influenza in children aged six months, adolescents and adults without any age limit . The Grippol Plus vaccine by pregnant women and nursing mothers . The safest use of the vaccine is in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
Despite the different composition of the drugs, Grippol Plus and Flu-M are considered one of the most effective and safe vaccines on the Russian market.
